Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton Coat of Arms

The main symbol on Bishop Thomas J. Gumbleton’s coat of arms is a stylized wheel. Gumbleton is a very active man and comes from a very active and dynamic city, Detroit. The wheel represents activity, dynamism and the circle of unity—working together.

Behind the wheel is a silver cross to represent his faith.

The number of tassels draped alongside the shield, six, is representative of Gumbleton’s title as bishop.

The motto—Estote Factores Verbi—from Latin translates to, “Be doers of the word,” which is taken from the letter of St. James (Jas 1:22).
