Archbishop Vigneron on Same Sex Marriage

Release Date: 5/10/12

On May 9, 2012, President Barack Obama stated his belief that same-sex couples should be able to get married. Having previously stated his opposition to the insurance mandate from the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and its serious threat to constitutionally protected religious freedoms, the archbishop of Detroit, Allen Vigneron, makes the following statement:

"Church leaders uphold the historical, logical, and, for Catholics, the sacramental nature of marriage as the union of one man and one woman. We remain opposed to any effort to modify the definition of this fundamental, life-giving unit of society. Sadly, the President is as wrong on this as he is on the HHS Mandate."
