When I was asked to select a Gospel reading for my installation Mass here in the Archdiocese of Detroit, I chose this powerful exchange between our Lord and St. Peter in the Gospel of St. John:

“Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” [Jesus] said to him, “Feed my sheep…” And when he had said this, he said to him, “Follow me” (John 21:15-17,19).

Christ’s words to Peter are also a call to all of us, members of the Church, to love and care for our brethren—a call to give to others what we have received from God so that they may also know his abundant and overwhelming love. It seemed like an appropriate message for beginning my ministry to all of you in the local Church of southeast Michigan.
