Archbishop Weisenburger Reaffirms Care for the Faithful as Archdiocesan Restructuring Continues

October 28, 2026 — Archbishop Edward J. Weisenburger has issued the following statement reaffirming care for the faithful as the Archdiocesan restructuring process continues:

"My first and enduring concern during this challenging time of restructuring is for the lay faithful, whose love, sacrifice, and steadfast commitment sustain the life of our parishes. While I believe our process will result in the same blessings it has brought to dioceses across the nation, I likewise recognize that proposed pastorate models and the prospect of priest reassignments can bring uncertainty, grief, or anxiety. These changes affect not only structures and schedules, but also cherished relationships, traditions, and the sense of home found in parish life. The concerns of the faithful have been heard and matter deeply to me. More than 400 public listening sessions, together with other opportunities to share hopes and concerns, have meaningfully informed the ongoing refinement of our restructuring process. This dialog continues, and no final decisions have been made.

"As shepherd of the Archdiocese of Detroit, I take very seriously my responsibility to protect the flock entrusted to my care. For this reason, I encourage the faithful to be cautious of outside organizations and individuals who solicit donations in exchange for claims they can use canon law to stop, control, or predetermine the outcome of the Archdiocese’s restructuring. As we continue to seek feedback and refine our plans, no organization or individual can guarantee a particular outcome or predetermine future decisions. Such promises distract from our shared efforts, stoke division, and can result in unfulfilled promises, potentially taking advantage of the faithful at a time when many are concerned and vulnerable.

"Those who have questions about their canonical rights deserve accurate information and qualified guidance. For this reason, the bishops of Michigan and I have collectively approved an extensive list of appropriate and effective canonical resources, which I have made readily available to our parishes. The Church’s canon law requires that its practitioners (“canonists”) obtain the local bishop's approval before practicing canon law in his jurisdiction as advocates in administrative processes or judicial hearings. I encourage anyone with questions to seek approved, qualified canonical counsel and to make informed decisions about any services they choose to pursue or fund.

"The Round Two proposed draft models are currently being refined, and thoughtful feedback remains essential. Parishioners may share specific feedback with their priests and key parish leaders. No final decisions have been made about future pastorates, parish closures or mergers, or Sunday Mass schedules. The final plan, along with priest assignments, will be announced in April 2027. Given the complexity and scale of this work, implementation will take time and require a transition period.

"Please join me in praying for our entire Archdiocese during this time of change. May the Lord renew our local Church, sustain our priests and our people, and guide us together toward a hopeful and faithful future."
