Archbishop Weisenburger issues statement on Pope Leo XIV’s health
October 21, 2026—Following the announcement from Pope Leo XIV’s doctors that the Holy Father needs no further medical treatment after surgery to remove a cancerous tumor, Archbishop of Detroit Edward J. Weisenburger issued the following statement:
“With a grateful and joyful heart, I give thanks to God for the recently released health update related to Pope Leo XIV. Tests have revealed that the Holy Father's cancer was localized to the tumor removed during his surgery and no additional medical treatments or procedures will be required. This is wonderful news for our Church and world. I am grateful as well to the faithful of the Archdiocese of Detroit for their prayers and concern for the Holy Father—along with those of good will who do not belong to our faith and who stood with us in solidarity and prayer. May God bless you all.”
