Regarding The National Catholic Church

The Archdiocese of Detroit Department of Communications invites parishes to publish the following advisory in their bulletins:

Regarding The National Catholic Church

Each of us in the Catholic faith community has a responsibility to reduce error, avoid schism, and promote ecclesiastical communion. To that end, the Archdiocese of Detroit shares the following information about a group operating in Dearborn and elsewhere called “The National Catholic Church,” which presents itself as offering “traditional sacraments.” While the group openly states that it is not in communion with Rome, the Archdiocese is issuing this notification because the use of the term “Catholic” may nevertheless cause confusion among the faithful regarding the group’s status and relationship to the Catholic Church.

The National Catholic Church appears to be affiliated with The Society of Our Lady, Queen of all Saints, a group the Archdiocese has previously identified as not being in ecclesiastical communion with the Roman Catholic Church.

In the interest of truth and to avoid confusion among the faithful, we must clarify that, as best we are able to determine, The National Catholic Church and The Society of Our Lady, Queen of all Saints are not organizations in ecclesiastical communion with the Catholic Church. Catholics are advised to avoid association with these groups.

Thank you for your attention to this important matter. Let us pray that God will bring all Christian communities into full communion with the Roman Catholic Church, so that we may all be one. (cf. John 17:21)
