Archbishop Weisenburger calls for peace and restraint

August 18, 2026—With reports of protests planned in Dearborn, Michigan, Archbishop of Detroit Edward J. Weisenburger adds his voice to those of religious and civic leaders in calling for peace and restraint:

I join with local and state civic and religious leaders in calling for peace and restraint as outside groups come into our community this evening in an attempt to provoke division and discord. Such efforts do not reflect the God we encounter in Jesus Christ.

Residents attending the city council meeting are urged not to confront or engage with demonstrators. We must refuse to give them the reaction they are seeking.

Dearborn, like any great American city, is home to people of many different faiths and backgrounds who live, work, and worship alongside one another. Tonight, let us show the strength of that community by choosing peace over provocation and unity over division.
