Statement Regarding laicization of Theodore McCarrick

Release Date: 2/16/19

In response to the Holy See’s announcement that Theodore McCarrick, former Archbishop of Washington, has been dismissed from the clerical state, Archbishop Vigneron joined the USCCB in affirming that no one is exempt from being held accountable for their actions.

Archbishop Vigneron’s statement:

“The Holy See’s announcement regarding Theodore McCarrick reinforces the Church’s renewed commitment to protecting everyone – especially minors and vulnerable adults – from sexual abuse and ensuring those who would commit abuse have no place in ministry. There is no excuse – ever – for the crime of sexual abuse, especially by those in Church leadership. Pope Francis’ judgment in this high-profile case affirms that no one is exempt from being held accountable. “In the Detroit archdiocese, I continue to keep our focus on the healing of victim-survivors – healing that is not possible without true transparency and a rebuilding of trust.”
