Position Description

Direct support of Regional Auxiliary Bishops.  Support for Project Abram and on-going work with the assignment board.  Transition Management of previous or new parish clusters or mergers, those resulting from priest retirements or due to the removal of a priest.  Proactive response to parishes and schools in challenging situations.
                                    ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND TASKS REQUIRED BY THIS JOB
  • Serve as a coordinator and facilitate Regional Moderator meetings for Bp. Gerard Battersby in the South Region of the Archdiocese of Detroit.
    1. Support for Regional Moderator meetings with Bp. Battersby:  Propose agenda items, take minutes, and invite appropriate Curia staff to attend
    2. Serve as the consistent initial point person for the bishop in support of his region.
    3. Assist the bishop to facilitate the management of conflict between pastor and parish pastoral councils, commissions and committees, consultative groups, Leadership Teams and parish staff.
    4. Develop and maintain relationships with all pastors in the region to proactively triage and/or solve for pastoral problems in parishes before problems escalate to the level of bishop.
    5. Provide follow up and ongoing support of parishes that have experienced a financial or other challenge.
  • Support of Project Abram, the assignment process and potential clusters of parishes that arise due to new priest assignments.
    1. Provide insights about history, parish activities and culture to the Assignment Board to support most effective assignments of priests aligned to unique gifts and charisms  
    2. Provide data analysis relative to census demographics, sacramental statistics and financial sustainability of parishes to help them make decisions
  • Facilitate the process of new clusters which may form in response to new priest assignments
    1. Meet with new pastor/administrator, staff, and parish leadership of both parishes to ease transition
    2. Guide pastor and parish leadership through the New Pastor Packet and provide models and resources for collaboration.
    3. Assist in the assessment of staffing needs in cooperation with the curia Human Resources, facilitate staffing transitions.
    4. With the curia Finance Department, assist with facility assessments to determine best use of all buildings, and potential future capex needs
    5. With the curia Finance Department, assist with the financial assessment of the parish
    6. Ensure clear and consistent communication is generated to parishioners
  • If a pastor does not have a Leadership Team, or upon request of pastors in new assignments, coach Leadership Teams [outside the MSP process] towards organizational health
  • Other duties as required.


  • Master’s degree in planning, pastoral ministry, theology or related field, or bachelor’s degree with equivalent experience.
  • A minimum five years’ experience in planning, training, presentations and meeting facilitation. 
  • Strong computer skills with demonstrated competence in Microsoft Office. Aptitude and willingness to learn new computer applications including Smartsheet, Box, etc.
  • Candidates with an institutional knowledge and understanding of Catholic parish operations highly preferred.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills and organizational skills.
  • Must be a Catholic in good standing who embraces and transmits the teachings of the church on matters of faith and morals. 
  • Must be able to work evenings and weekends, and travel throughout the archdiocese.
