Position Description

FLSA: Salary – Exempt
Job Status: Full-time or Part-time depending on qualifications
Reporting to: Pastor
 
St. Lawrence Catholic Church and School in Utica, Michigan is seeking to fill an immediate opening within our Pastoral Staff for a Coordinator of Youth Ministry.  This position seeks a highly energetic, innovative and faith-filled person capable of developing and implementing a religious ministry focused on the teen youth of St. Lawrence.  With an elementary and middle school of over 750 students and a church community that serves over 3,300 families, St. Lawrence offers an excellent opportunity for that special candidate to build a wonderful and joyful youth ministry in service of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ!

Specifically, our Coordinator of Youth Ministry will:
 
  • Plan and execute a youth ministry program focused on middle and high school students and young adults that helps our youth transition towards devoted Christian Adulthood.
  • Understand and have a working knowledge of the National Conference of Catholic Bishops’ document Renewing the Vision – A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry and integrate that document into the St. Lawrence Youth Ministry program.
  • Incorporate the evangelical vision of Archbishop Vigneron’s letter Unleash the Gospel as it pertains to youth and young adult ministry and the development of Joyful, Missionary Disciples.
  • Work closely with other Pastoral Staff, including our Pastor, School Principal, Director of Religious Education, and Christian Service Coordinator, to ensure that the Youth Ministry is fully-integrated with, and complementary to, other parish ministries and programs.
  • Develop relationships of trust, empathy and mutuality with teens and adults.
  • Formulate and implement youth retreat and service programs and lead participation in youth conferences including, but not limited to, Rainbow, WIND, World Youth Day and the National Conference for Youth Council.
  • Recruit, train, supervise and support adult volunteers for youth ministry.

Qualifications/Requirements

The most-qualified candidate for this position will possess or exemplify the following qualifications and/or requirements:
 
  • Be a practicing Roman Catholic with an active faith life in full communion with the Catholic Church and all of its teachings.
  • Possess a degree in pastoral ministry, religious education, theology or a related field with a Youth Ministry Certification.  A solid understanding of sacramental theology, Catholic morality and adolescent catechesis is essential.
  • Exhibit proficiency and developmental skills with technology and social media platforms.
  • Be willing to travel for retreats and conferences, maintain a flexible schedule and be available evenings and weekends and on religious holidays.
  • Thoroughly understand the Archdiocese’s requirements pertaining to youth ministers and protecting children/youth.
  • Be a strong communicator, both written and verbal, and be well-organized and capable of implementing systems to track paperwork, finances, forms and programs typically associated with a youth ministry program.
  • Be capable and comfortable with leading prayer services and involving teens in parish worship activities.
 
The successful candidate for our Youth Ministry program will be required to complete a full and confidential criminal background check and will be required to complete the VIRTUS safe environment training – Protecting God’s Children.  We offer compensation and benefit programs in accordance with guidelines established by the Archdiocese and the Michigan Catholic Conference.  References will be required.
