Position Summary/Purpose:
The National Shrine of the Little Flower in Royal Oak is seeking a passionate, energetic and engaging candidate to join our dynamic team as Coordinator of Youth Ministry.
The Coordinator of Youth Ministry will oversee the development of a dynamic parish based pastoral ministry with the middle school and high school youth of the parish (grades 7 to 12) which is inclusive of the goals, principles, and components of a youth ministry as found in Renewing the Vision, A Framework for Catholic Youth Ministry.
In the spirit of Unleash the Gospel, the Coordinator of Youth Ministry will encourage, challenge and mentor young people as they encounter Jesus and grow as his disciples, empowering them to take their place in the mission of the parish as agents of the new evangelization with the unique ability to reach people of their own generation.
Empower Youth to Live as Disciples of Jesus:
  • Provide concrete ways by which the demands, excitement and adventure of being a disciple of Jesus can be personally experienced.
Draw Youth to Join in the Life, Mission and Work of the Catholic Community:
  • Foster the growth of the parish as a “youth-friendly” community that values, welcomes and supports young people by recognizing their gifts and talents, giving them meaningful roles in leadership and ministry, and encouraging their active contribution in the evangelistic mission of the Church.
Foster the Personal and Spiritual Growth of Young People:
  • Promote the growth of healthy, competent, caring and faith-filled Catholic young people by addressing their spiritual needs in the context of his or her whole life including fostering of a positive adolescent development and growth in both Christian discipleship and Catholic identity. 
Support Parents in Their Vocation as Spiritual Leaders:
  • Collaborate with other staff and community leaders to equip parents as they accompany and support the faith life of their teenagers.
Build Relationships and Equip Leaders:
  • Engage youth and their families at parish and community events in order to support them and connect them with our youth ministry offerings.
  • Recruit and train a team of competent, faithful, and contagious adult and teen leaders.
Communicate Effectively:
  • Create and prepare marketing material and youth ministry emails, social media posts and communications to engage and inform young people and their families.
Coordinate Events:
  • Plan, coordinate and oversee weekly youth ministry meetings, small groups, and youth conferences for all parish high school teenagers including catechetical, service and social events as well as coordinating with other vicariate youth ministers.
  • Coordinate, oversee and manage fundraising opportunities in support of youth ministries.
  • Ensure all youth ministry offerings are in compliance with VIRTUS and AOD safe environment policies.
  • Support sacramental preparation for Confirmation as needed.
  • Support Vacation Bible School as needed.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Performance Appraisal:
Director of Evangelization and Faith Formation will conduct an initial appraisal within 180 days of employment followed by an annual appraisal.


Candidate must be a practicing Catholic, in good standing, in full communion with the Catholic Church and embracing the fullness of the teaching of the church.
Candidate must possess Bachelor’s degree in theology or related field, as well as Youth Ministry Certification through AOD (or working towards).
Candidate must have a minimum of three years of experience in youth ministry.
Candidate must demonstrate the ability and willingness to work collaboratively with clergy, staff, pastoral leadership, Shrine High School and Academy campus ministry, and volunteers at the parish level, as well as with Archdiocesan Offices, other Coordinators of Youth Ministry, and area schools (public and private).
Candidate must exhibit strong organizational and communication skills and be proficient with technology and social media platforms.
Candidate must be willing and able to travel locally, have a flexible schedule, and be available some nights and weekends.
Candidate must complete a background check and VIRTUS safe environment training.
