Position Description

Our Lady Queen of Martyrs is seeking a 5th grade teacher to serve in a long term sub position (for a maternity leave Aug-Oct) and then transition to a job sharing position in the same classroom (teaching 2.5 days per week) for the 2019-2020 school year.  OLQM is a close-knit, faith-filled community dedicated to nurturing students who will contribute to the world through faith, character, and lifelong learning. The 5th grade sub and part time teacher will facilitate the spiritual, intellectual, emotional, and social growth of students by providing them with the structure and guidance necessary to meet their needs.

Qualifications/Requirements

All teachers in the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit shall be certified and /or approved for teaching by the Department of Education for the State of Michigan.  All teachers are required to hold the appropriate endorsement for the subject(s) they are assigned to teach.  All teachers who are catechist,(teachers of religion), must be certified by the Department of Evangelization, Catechesis and Schools.

Applicant must have A bachelor’s degree or higher in elementary education. Additionally, this position focuses on science and literacy instruction (a minor in science or a reading endorsement is a plus).


Candidates should be prepared to:

  • Follow the curriculum maps set by the teacher and school for science and literacy

  • Instruct students on a daily basis using developmentally appropriate materials and methods
     

  • Prepare regular lesson plans for weekly review
     

  • Attend all faculty meetings and school events at which faculty attendance is required
     

  • Prepare and submit required student records and reports on a timely basis
     

  • Maintain effective communications with partner teachers, parents and students
     

  • Establish an atmosphere of caring that is physically neat, organized, and supports students in learning 

  • Lead the students to a total commitment of themselves to the Person of Jesus Christ 

  • Promote learning experiences which meet the needs of the individual student

  • Maintain academic excellence through the use of fine teaching methods, designated curriculum, and relevant novels, technology integration and materials 

  • Provide rigorous instruction in science, reading, writing, grammar, and vocabulary in alignment with Catholic teachings 

  • Expand students intellectual development, as well as to promote their emotional development through appropriate social interaction

  • Utilize the Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop teaching model 

  • Facilitate a Catholic atmosphere in which each student feels secure in the knowledge of God’s love for him/her

  • Provide class opportunities to work together and promote social growth and acquired needed social skills 

  • Maintains order and decorum through students own self-discipline

  • Provide active monitoring of students at all times (both in the classroom and throughout the school)
