Position Description

The Director of Academic Support’s role will be to aid in the academic success of two particular student groups: 1) students who have school-approved Accommodations Plans and 2) students who have been identified by the faculty, staff or principal as struggling academically.
The Director of Academic Support will ensure that all students’ Accommodations Plans are implemented in the each classroom at SMCC. He/She will coordinate a time and space within the Learning Resource Center for students to work on testing or receive further academic support.  The Director will also work with students and families who need assistance in identifying potential learning difficulties that need specific accommodations or interventions. The Director of Academic Support will also serve as the primary resource person for students who are struggling academically. He/She will work with the College Advising Office, Faculty and Administration of SMCC to highlight students who need academic support. The Director of Academic Support will then coordinate student-specific interventions to help those students succeed at SMCC via tutoring, before or after school study halls or other learning strategies.  

Qualifications/Requirements

All teachers in the Catholic Schools in the Archdiocese of Detroit shall be certified and /or approved for teaching by the Department of Education for the State of Michigan. All teachers are required to hold the appropriate endorsement for the subject(s) they are assigned to teach.

Qualities for a good candidate should include organizational skills, creativity, intuitiveness, even temperament, detailed oriented, and possess a true love of students.  Candidates must have a Bachelor’s Degree. Experience in the fields of academic support or special education, including further educational degrees are preferred. Michigan Teaching Certification is preferred.  Practicing Catholics are preferred but not required. All candidates must be supportive of the Catholic identity and mission of St. Mary Catholic Central High School.
