Position Description

Learning Specialist Description

The Learning Specialist reports to the Principal and works closely with faculty, counselors and the administrative team. The Learning Specialist supports students with IEP’s, Non-Public Services Plans (504’s) and other challenges in the classroom with strategies, organization, and study skills; provides individual instruction as appropriate; and serves as a resource for faculty.  The Learning Specialist will also coordinate services with South Lyon Public Schools for additional testing and support with our IEP students.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provide one-on-one and small-group support/instruction for students, both in push-in and pull-out environments.
  • Make regular assessments of student achievement and progress.
  • Report regularly on student achievement and progress.
  • Attend Parent-Teacher Conferences, IEP and Non-Public Service Plan (504) meetings to discuss pupil progress with parents, if required.
  • Meet with individual parents as necessary to discuss the progress of their children.
  • Read and summarize all evaluations for students.
  • Counsel families on learning support and assessment accommodations.
  • Support teaching staff by offering resources, assistance, advice, and training to enable faculty to better meet the needs of all learners.
  • Develop and maintain communication and documentation protocols related to learning support.
  • Assume an active role in student support team meetings.
  • Coordinate detailed testing of students by outside specialists.
  • Manage testing accommodations for standardized testing.
  •  Coordinate the use of external tutors and learning specialists.
  • Act as the liaison with local school districts and attend meetings as appropriate.
  • Oversee implementation of accommodations and extended-time testing.
  • Consult with Admissions Director on accommodations needs of admissions candidates.
  • Assist with the writing of Non-Public Services Plans that will target students’ specific curricular/learning needs.


Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree and certification in special education or related field. Master’s degree preferred.
  • At least two years of experience as a learning specialist or in a related role.
  • Familiarity with legal responsibilities of independent schools related to IEP and 504 plans.
  • Ability to collaborate with faculty, staff, administration, and parents.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, verbally and in writing.
  • Desire to work in a Catholic environment and support the values and mission of Catholic education.
