Chartwells Catering Menu

TO: All Priests, All Religious Men & Women

FROM: Don Genotti – Director of Finance & Controller

Due to the current environment and the impacts of the supply chain on the Sacred Heart Major Seminary Food Service Program, it was necessary for the Archdiocese to adjust meal prices accordingly, in an effort to contain costs and simplify the overall pricing structure. Please see the current meal pricing, identification, and payment process below.

SPECIAL NOTE: Until further notice, guests are not allowed to go through the cafeteria line or eat in the refectory dining area. However, guests are allowed to host meetings in one of the meeting rooms (i.e., Cardinal Mooney Parlor, Bishop Gallagher Parlor, Cardinal Dearden Porch, Gymnasium, Cardinal Maida Boardroom, St. Martha Dining Room, St. Thomas Moore Dining Room), and order off the catering menu to have food brought to the meeting room.

Meal Pricing:

Effective September 7, 2021, the Sacred Heart Major Seminary (SHMS) Cafeteria meal pricing policy is as follows:

  • All Priests and Religious Men and Women (Religious) living or working at SHMS will not be charged for any meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).
  • Any guest (priest, religious or lay) of a SHMS Resident Priest, will not be charged for any meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner).
  • All other Priests and Religious will be charged a discounted price of $6.00 per meal for any meal (breakfast, lunch, and dinner). A receipt can be requested for reimbursement.
  • If you invite a lay guest (other than guests of SHMS Resident Priests) to join you, they will be charged $7.75 per meal.

Anyone intending to be reimbursed by their employer may request a receipt.

Paying guests may also purchase the following a la carte items at the price listed below if they wish to purchase any of these without paying for a full meal:

A la Carte ItemPrice
'Hand' fruit (apple, orange, banana, etc.)$0.50
Yogurt or Ice Cream Cup$1.00
Breakfast Pastry$1.50
Cup of Soup$1.50
Lunch or Dinner Dessert$2.00
Side Salad (one trip to Salad Bar on 5" plate or a small to-go box)$3.00

Identification Process for Payment:

A new point-of sale system, Meal Magic, has been implemented to track meal counts and pricing. This requires all Priests/Religious who live or work at SHMS to enter their PIN or present their SHMS badge, and all Curia staff to present their employee badge when going through the cafeteria line, in order to provide member identification and automatically apply the applicable meal price.

PLEASE NOTE: If you do not present your SHMS or AOD Curia badge, lay staff will be charged $7.75 per meal. Priests/Religious who do not know their PIN, do not present their SHMS or AOD Curia badge and are not wearing a Roman collar/habit will be charged $7.75. Please do not request an exception to this process in the cafeteria line, as this process allows Chartwells staff to identify currently employed Curia staff for discounted meal pricing.

Payment Policy:

Effective September 7, 2021, the Sacred Heart Major Seminary Cafeteria accepts payment via credit card or check made payable to “Archdiocese of Detroit”. Cash is no longer accepted. If you will be submitting your meal cost for reimbursement, you may request a receipt from the cashier.

SHMS and AOD Curia Business Meetings through Cafeteria Line:

SPECIAL NOTE: Until further notice, guests are not allowed to go through the cafeteria line or eat in the refectory dining area. However, guests are allowed to host meetings in one of the meeting rooms (i.e., Cardinal Mooney Parlor, Bishop Gallagher Parlor, Cardinal Dearden Porch, Gymnasium, Cardinal Maida Boardroom, St. Martha Dining Room, St. Thomas Moore Dining Room), and order off the catering menu to have food brought to the meeting room.

If you are hosting a SHMS or Curia Business Meeting, and your guests will be going through the Cafeteria line (i.e., not being catered), at least three (3) days prior for parties of more than 10, or at least one (1) day prior for parties of 10 or less, you must request an event through SchoolDude or contact Dawn Fraser (fraser.dawn@aod.org or 313-883-8500). Please provide the date and name of event, the SHMS or Curia Department hosting the meeting, the meal period (breakfast, lunch, or dinner), number of guests, and state whether payment will be made via credit card (paid at the cafeteria) or billed to the Department identified in SchoolDude. All guests will be charged $6.00 per meal for any meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner). However, for AOD Archbishop and Moderator business meetings, they and their guests will not be charged.

A SHMS or Curia staff member must bring the print-out from School Dude to the cafeteria, confirming the event and number of guests, and accompany the business meeting participants through the cafeteria line as one group, to identify them and for payment processing purposes.

Use of Meal Tickets:

Meal tickets are no longer accepted. Any unused meal tickets should be returned to Don Genotti, AOD Director of Finance & Controller, specifying the original department that was issued the meal tickets. Don will then confirm and reverse the prior charge to the department. If you have any questions regarding this policy or process, please contact Fran Ashe (ashe.fran@aod.org).
