Papal Transition

In the early evening hours of March 13, the cardinal electors chose Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to be the new Holy Father for the Catholic Church throughout the world. He was introduced to the faithful in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican as Pope Francis. He will follow the eight-year papacy of Pope Benedict XVI who on February 28 became the first pope in six centuries to resign.
