Papal Transition In the early evening hours of March 13, the cardinal electors chose Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio of Buenos Aires, Argentina, to be the new Holy Father for the Catholic Church throughout the world. He was introduced to the faithful in St. Peter's Square at the Vatican as Pope Francis.
