A holy day of obligation for all Catholics, the Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary celebrates the title of Mary as the Mother of God, recognized by the Church dating to the Council of Ephesus in 431 A.D.
The feast day, intentionally held on the octave day of the Christmas season (which, coincidentally, is New Year’s Day on the secular calendar) emphasizes Christ’s incarnation as the son of Mary – that he was both truly human and truly divine. |
