Michigan Dioceses

Michigan also contains a so-called titular see, the Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie, which was founded in the Upper Peninsula many years before even Detroit. The region was once a full diocese but the seat was eventually moved to a more populated area, Marquette, in 1865. The Diocese of Sault Ste. Marie remains in title only. The Archdiocese of Detroit is the most populous diocese in the state of Michigan with 1.4 million Catholic residents. In the Roman Catholic Church structure, Michigan is known as the Ecclesiastical Province of Detroit, which lists dioceses in Gaylord, Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing, Marquette, Saginaw and Detroit among its ranks.
