Position Description

Assist parishes and schools in understanding and complying with civil law and Archdiocesan financial and administrative policies and procedures through financial, operational and compliance audits.

  • In accordance with established audit programs, initiate and conduct financial, operational and compliance audits at Archdiocesan parishes and schools, as assigned by supervisor.
    • Conduct risk assessment of assigned parish/school based on prior audits and other information.
    • Determine scope of review in conjunction with supervisor, determining when to use focused-area audits (e.g., cash only, payroll only, etc.).
    • Conduct audit testing and identify reportable issues and dimension of risk; Review the suitability of internal controls; Determine compliance with Archdiocesan policies and procedures.
    • Communicate findings to supervisor and advise supervisor if findings indicate an increase in audit scope or fraud investigation is warranted.
    • Prepare audit report of findings and corrective actions, offering alternatives when standard corrective action(s) aren’t feasible.
  • Responsible for continuous knowledge development regarding regulations, best practices, tools, techniques and performance standards.
  • Process and/or facilitate close-out of all financial matters pertaining to parish suppressions and non-parish school closures, as stated in the Parish, Vicariate and Archdiocesan Councils Handbook.
  • Assist supervisor in explaining findings and corrective actions in audit reports when necessary.
  • Assist Associate Director and/or other Senior Auditors in preparing and/or presenting audit related training sessions for pastors, parish/school Business Managers/Accountants/Bookkeepers and Parish Finance Council members.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.


  • Bachelor degree in Accounting required; CPA, CIA, CFE, CISA or similar certification preferred
  • 5 years public accounting, internal auditing, security/risk management, or loss prevention experience
  • High attention to detail and excellent analytical, verbal/written communication, interpersonal and relationship building skills
  • Sound independent judgment
  • Highly developed computer skills in MS Word, Excel, and financial accounting software; experience with data analytic software preferred
  • Ability to adapt to change
  • Available to occasionally work nights and weekends, if needed
  • Ability to travel throughout the Archdiocese of Detroit
  • Must maintain strict confidentiality handling highly sensitive material
