Position Description

Part/Full-Time Music Director/Organist

Qualifications/Requirements

  • Liturgical Musician Certification and/or Bachelor's Degree in Music is preferred.
  • Archdiocesan Musical Certification or equivalent is encouraged and preferred.
  • Must have a deep knowledge of Roman Catholic Liturgy and liturgical musical styles.
  • Must be able to cantor at all masses, if required.
  • Must be able to work well with others and collaborate on a Pastoral Staff.
  • Musical Support, including the selection, preparation, and execution of music for the following Liturgies in order to lead the congregation in worship:
4 weekend Masses; one Saturday and three on Sunday each week.
One grade school Mass per week (Tuesday).
Holy Days of Obligation, annually.
Funerals, approximately 45 per year.
Weddings, approximately 10 per year.
1st Holy Communions and Confirmations, annually.
Friday Lenten Stations of the Cross.
An annual Christmas Program prepared by students of Monroe Catholic Elementary Schools at the St. John Parish Campus (if required or requested by Pastor).
Potentially, Advent and Lenten Penance Services.
Potentially, an 8th grade graduation Mass.
Some U.S. Holidays depending on when they fall on the calendar (i.e.. Tuesday or Thursday such as Thanksgiving D (Thanksgiving Day Mass every year).
Other Liturgies and para-liturgical services not mentioned here but agreed upon in advance.
 
Other Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
  • Liturgical Planning with Pastor.
  • Assistance of a Funeral Family for music selection (et. al.) in connection with Bereavement Ministry Team, if needed.
  • Organization and set-up of choir loft.
  • Attendance at Staff Meetings, monthly.
  • Attendance at Worship Commission Meetings, monthly.
  • Supervision and coordination of all musical volunteers, professionals, and choirs, including choir rehearsals and practices with cantors.
  • Choirs may include but are not limited to Hand-Bell, Funeral, Children’s, a Sunday 10 am Mass Choir.
  • Learning knowledge and working knowledge of sound system and software.
  • Work with Finance Director to set and adhere to Music Budget for Parish.
  • Organization and maintenance of all musical instruments and music library, including the repair or disposal of old or inoperable instruments.
  • Locating and obtaining substitute organists and cantors when not available.
  • Maintain at least 16 hours of campus office hours to be available to staff and others who may need to communicate with you. (These hours may vary during summer time months and may increase during the Seasons of Christmas and Easter.)
  • Work with Finance Director to set and adhere to Music Budget for Parish.
