DETROIT, MI (4 May 2017) – Pope Francis announced today that Father Solanus Casey, a member of the Capuchin Franciscan Order of St. Joseph in Detroit and one of the co-founders of the city’s Capuchin Soup Kitchen, has passed the rigorous test assigned to the process of Sainthood, by being elevated from Venerable to Blessed by the Roman Catholic Church. In his statement this morning, Pope Francis announced that Fr. Solanus Casey had the necessary documentation of healings attributed to his intercession, what the Church would consider a miracle, approved by a panel of doctors and theologians.  The Congregation for the Causes of Saints brought their recommendation to the Holy Father on April 25, 2017 that Venerable Fr. Solanus Casey be advanced to “Blessed” – which is the final step before Canonization as a Saint in the Catholic Church.
