Cardinal Edmund Casimir Szoka, who served between 1981 and 1990 as the eighth chief shepherd of the Archdiocese of Detroit, was a spiritual father who greatly influenced the life of the Church not just in Michigan, but throughout the world through his service at the Vatican. As the people of the Archdiocese of Detroit, Pope Francis and many others mourn his death, we thank God for his strong and loving leadership.
Cardinal Szoka will lie in state at the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament from 2 PM to 9 PM on Sunday, August 24. A prayer service, the Office of the Dead, will take place Sunday evening at 7 PM. Visitation also will take place at the Cathedral from 2 PM until 9 PM on Monday, August 25, with a Rosary service at 3 PM and a vigil service at 7 PM.
Visitation will take place at the Cathedral on Tuesday, August 26, from 9 AM until the Funeral Mass at 11 AM Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Southfield.
